As part of its ongoing efforts to improve the sector’s competitiveness, particularly in the area of animal nutrition, which represents nearly 70% of production costs, ASPROCER held a workshop for Chilean pork producing companies’ Nutrition Managers.
ASPROCER President Juan Carlos Domínguez expressed his thanks to the US Embassy and the US Soybean Export Council (USSEC) for making it possible for Dr. Hans Stein, Director of the Monogastric Nutrition Laboratory at the University of Illinois to attend the workshop.
“Together with the US Embassy, we have organized a training session featuring Dr. Stein, US soy producers and professionals from companies linked to the association so that they can share their knowledge and experience regarding the use of this ingredient, which is key to pork nutrition in our country. Chile has to import 100% of its soy, and the US is a key global producer of this ingredient,” Domínguez stated.
The activity is part of the pork industry’s ongoing efforts to improve its competitiveness, particularly in regard to nutrition, a key factor in production in that it represents approximately 70% of costs.
Today Chile’s pork industry stands out because of its high level of competitiveness at the global level even though it is not self-sufficient in regard to its need for corn and soy. Chile is the sixth largest exporter of pork in the world according to the most recent USDA statistics (2016). It ships over 290,000 tons per year to more than 30 countries. This represents 58% of all of the pork produced in Chile.
